Demand for vegan beauty is on the up, but also cruelty-free and sustainably produced cosmetics, wellness and haircare, with consumers completely rethinking how clean beauty can work for them without exploitation of others.
At Lagoon Beauty, we are committed to providing clarity about our conscious beauty brands and that includes zero compromise on ethics. We champion natural, non toxic and organic ingredients and want to be at the fore-front on plastic free packaging.
So whether you’re a dedicated vegan, a flexitarian or are exploring more environmentally friendly choices; here is our question and answer guide to plant powered beauty, featuring some of our bestsellers.
Unfortunately there is still no legal standard for vegan beauty, but the Vegan Society certifies that products do not contain any animal extracts or animal by-products in the ingredients or the manufacturing process. You can also keep eyes out for common animal derived by-products such as beeswax, carmine, allantoin, gelatin, honey, lanolin, squalene or ambergris.
A deeper dive into animal derived by-products within beauty may surprise and shock you. Restoring the body’s natural resources of collagen needn’t involve animals. Plant-based foods high in all three amino acids found in collagen include black, kidney beans, pumpkin and nuts.
Carmine; a bright red pigment derived from the crushed bodies of female cochineal insects is traditionally found in lipsticks and blush, however increasingly ethical alternatives using beetroot extract and sweet potato are just as effective Shellac, most commonly found in nail polish, is a resin secreted by the lac insect as part of their reproductive process but there are plenty of vegan friendly options now.
Shoreditch Nails’ trend-forward polishes are of the highest quality, vegan, cruelty free and pro-ecology made with 85% natural ingredients. Whether you’re more of a minimal and classic colour lover or like your nail art totally attention grabbing, we have 14 gorgeous shades for you to choose from.
Remember, the label “cruelty-free” means this product and its ingredients were not tested on animals. And the label “vegan” means that this product does not contain animal products or ingredients.
Studies show that a global shift to a vegan diet would reduce land use by 75% and carbon emissions by up to 70%, whilst beauty products often contain byproducts of the agricultural industry. Therefore making the sustainable switch to vegan, naturally you are easing the pressure on water, land and carbon footprint.
Vegan beauty is also perfect for packaging, often utilising recycled, recyclable and biodegradable forms and refill schemes. According to Zero Waste Week, more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced globally every year by the cosmetics industry, from single-use plastic to impossible to recycle mixed materials.
UpCircle is inspired by transforming throwaway coffee grounds; this vegan skincare range has easy and efficacious products that use, and celebrate, waste byproducts. Its quality skincare that gives salvaged natural ingredients a new lease of life.
Start to refine your beauty routine to skinimalism which prioritises a less is more approach whilst using simple yet effective ingredients which keep nature and wellbeing in mind. You also don’t need a cupboard brimming full of beauty. Look for multi-use products or ways to repurpose lipsticks, blushers and eyeshadows… so your face is full of slow beauty.
The Wake Up & Glow Lip, Cheek and Skin Tint from Studio 10 is an ultra-nourishing, hyaluronic-enriched balm with unique PH-balancing pigments that’s totally buildable, and perfect for multi-use makeup.

At Lagoon Beauty, we are looking forward to gloriously late nights full of overindulgence, but often the skin takes the toll, becoming dull, problematic and blemish prone.
If you need skincare hacks to get glowing, gorgeous and healthy results that look like Christmas has had you well rested and ready to work on your New Year skincare resolutions.
Get clever with your cleansing routine.
Winter can cause the skin to start losing additional moisture, and you’ll probably find that you will need to incorporate more hydrating and nourishing products to protect skin from cold, damp conditions. Combine that with
Double cleanse daily, with award-winning, beautiful Cleansing Face Balm, from UpCircle, made with finely-ground powder of discarded apricot stones and perfect for all skin types. Remove makeup, pollution and impurities with skin-calming blackcurrant seed, blue tansy and sea buckthorn oils.
Or try Beauty Cleanse’s Anti Pollution Deep Cleansing Oil and Makeup Remover… it’s brimming with nutrient-rich superfood ingredients and just like a Juice Cleanse for stressed-out & blemish-prone complexions.
Mask up.
We are all used to facial covering masks being an intergral part of our daily routine. And unfortunately that means saying hello to maskne or acne breakouts, chafing and irritation. Combine with winter dry skin, and it’s a dermatological nightmare.
Look no further than this do-it-all multitasking miracle Nearly Everything Powder Mask from Beauty Cleanse, loaded with liquorice, rice and charcoal extracts. Brighten and tighten with an instant radiance boost, whilst delivering deep cleansing to pores, this turmeric and aloe vera enriched mask is perfect for reducing dark spots, inflammation UVA damage. It’s also cleverly made using up-cycled rice and unwanted charcoal extracts utilised from British food industry.
Power skin with plants.
January is Veganuary and going plant-based has so many benefits for skin as well as general wellbeing and environment. Veggies are loaded with healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, which can improve skin clarity and help you give beauty benefits by strengthening body’s cells to battle against free radicals which can be found in broccoli and bell peppers.
Bolster and boost collagen regeneration with all-star antioxidant vitamin C which can help calm acne and increase skin elasticity. Or try tasty tofu, which contain the same natural hydrocolloids which many plant-based skincare products contain in texture without needing to add environmentally harmful petrochemicals.
We are very pleased to welcome Scandinavian minimal wellness brand Meraki to Lagoon Beauty, which are created with clean ingredients and invite you to make the most of moments in nature.

There’s no denying the way our skin looks can have a huge impact on how we feel. Can a lipstick, concealer or serum really lift our mood and change the way we carry on with our day?
My answer is yes! I don’t k now about you but the minute I brighten my eyes or add a pop of colour to my cheeks and lips I instantly feel brighter and uplifted on days I feel a little low.
So here are my 5 top beauty products I reach for everyday to lift my mood at home.
Give yourself a tan and feel the warmth glow through your skin. I know I am missing sun sea and sand! So, I’ve been adding 2 to 3 drops of the Tropic skincare sun drops to my moisturiser every day. Makes my skin feel bright and fresh each day.
With or without makeup a serum will make your skin feel like you’ve just had a facial, multiuse mean green serum hydrates and nourishes the skin leaving a gorgeous glow. Also, you can use the left over on your cuticles or even run your hands through the ends of your hair. I am obsessed with this product.
Don’t get me wrong I love my skin but the dark shadows and circles I can happily live without! The minute I apply my studio 10 concealer it instantly brightens my eyes.
Quick and easy just like that you can add a dash of colour to your lips and cheeks with minimal effort.
I wore perfume every day before lockdown, yet I found myself not reaching for the bottle (of perfume) during lockdown. I love my Stella McCartney original so to have the sweet smell all day everyday just for me definitely lifts my mood. So simple and effective.

In a world where we could dream, mine was always for perfect skin. No blemishes, redness or sore spots that ached my face. Basically I dreamed of a day that my acne didn’t exist anymore.
Now I know what you must think.... Skin isn't perfect, it isn't one colour, it isn't one texture, it isn't a blank canvas that has no character whatsoever. Skin is our largest organ that shields and protects our body. Pretty amazing if you ask me!
I was blessed with adult acne at the age of 25. Now the reason why I say blessed is because 7 years on I am in one of the best places I have ever been and when I look back at my journey, not having acne wouldn't have led me to where I am today.. Weird I know but so true.
Let me divulge...
In the early stages of my business I developed adult acne. Working in an industry that puts me at the front of the public eye I decided to seek medical help. I took medical advice from doctors and hospitals but after a while the impact of my medication I was taking started to have negative effects on my health (mentally and physically) and well-being. I began looking at the ingredients I was putting onto my skin and in my body and I was horrified at what I found. Chemicals that are harmful not only to me but when rinsed away became harmful in where they are going, how they were disposed of and the effects it had on a larger scale. Our environment. So I began researching my skin condition and how I could help to clear it with a cleaner and natural approach. I came across a couple of brands that were selling products with all-natural ingredients and had claims to curing acne with some clever marketing and photography. I was always sceptical about this as having spent hundreds of pounds on products that had the same claims and didn't work.. So I guess my approach to brands had changed.
My best friend's sister was selling products from Tropic skincare. She caught wind I was struggling and dropped me a message and asked if I wanted to try out a borrow box and test the skincare. I wasn't too keen at first but hey I had nothing to lose. What I was using wasn't currently working so give anything a go right! I Hadn't heard much of the product company, I only knew that the owner was on the apprentice! So I gave it a go...now they did not claim to cure anything they simply laid out exactly what was in the product and made suggestions on why and how that ingredient or product could help you. Clear transparency exactly what I was looking for.
BEST DECISION I MADE!
WEEK 1Received my box and it came with an advised routine and how to use the products and what was in them. It was a good day, my first time washing my face with the cleanser felt soft, clean and smelt amazing.
WEEK 2
Using the products everyday following the same consistent routine of what i was advised. My skin routine was starting to become a thing of joy and not hatred which was so good for me. I made the choice and invested in my own products and ordered everything I had used.
4 MONTHS LATER
My skin was starting to change, it became less sore, under the skin spots became fewer and I started to notice that my flare ups weren't as bad as before. I still had them but not as severe as I was used to.By this point not only was I raving about the products I was using, people were asking me about my skin and what I was doing to help clear my acne. They wanted to use them too, So I became an ambassador for tropic skincare. My love for my skin started to grow again and my passion for clean beauty evolved.
3 years later.... lots of research, trial and testing and finding makeup and skincare products that work with us rather than against us, care for our environment I can finally bring to you products that work and that I use in everyday life for myself and for my job as a makeup artist. This is why I decided to launch Lagoon Beauty.
Now because of the way Tropic skincare work I wasn't able to catalogue the products however I do have my own tropic website that you can find all the products I reference and use.
So please feel free to follow the link and take a look. Shopping from my site will help me to bring you value, knowledge and new products that are kind to you and our environment. Help support the brands that are making a clean change to the beauty industry.
All my love Sian x

‘Over the past few years, production in many industries has become more ethical and transparent due to the consumer’s demand as well as technology and media. The beauty industry is following the same trend by adopting more responsible ways of production like all natural ingredients, sustainability, biodegradable packaging, and cruelty-free products. Conscious beauty implies consumer’s awareness and a strong interest in products that are placing a focus on health and environment. In the attempt to get hold of the quality and healthy products, many consumers end up deceived by misleading marketing that stands behind some brands. Before you splurge on beautifying next time, here are few things to take into account.
Organic products guarantee toxic-free origins of any ingredient. In the beauty industry, organic products include ingredients that are free of pesticides, antibiotics or any other chemical fertilizer. There is a big difference between products that contain organic ingredients and the ones that are certified organic. Organic certification goes only for the products that consist 95% or more of the ingredients that are certified organic. However, many companies brand their products as organic, where in fact they are made with some organic ingredients combined with unwanted chemicals. Read the labels and look for the logos of certification authority.
Increasing number of people finds animal testing inhumane and are starting to appreciate advantages of cruelty-free products. The growing number of cruelty-free oriented consumers caused many brands to turn to animal-friendly slogans. However, a change in the marketing strategy does not necessarily mean the shift to more ethical approach. Many big brands mask animal cruelty behind the third party testing which usually means that other testing authority carried out the tests for them. If you are unsure about the specific product, read the ingredients list and learn which ingredients to avoid.
Choosing natural products is the best way to avoid chemicals, although not all synthetic ingredients are necessarily harmful. Natural products consist of mineral, botanical and animal ingredients while many products can be partially natural. Some of the chemicals are added to maintain the effectiveness of particular ingredient or to preserve them. To make sure you have a 100% natural product carefully read the labels but keep in mind that sometimes some of the chemicals are not listed.
The safest way to give your skin a proper care is to prepare your products. Use natural ingredients from your home and avoid unhealthy chemicals. These natural alternatives are quite effective, safe and inexpensive. Ingredients like honey, sugar, salt, olive oil, lemon juice, turmeric, and baking soda are well known for their properties, but the list of useful ingredients is endless. There are plenty of tips on the internet that will help you create safe and healthy products, whether shampoo, skin scrub or moisturizer.
Ironically, most of the beauty industry brands that promote good and healthy look are making products that can be quite harmful in the long run. On the average, women apply over 168 ingredients daily. Some of the chemicals can cause toxic effect and developmental abnormalities in children born to women using these products while pregnant. Being health conscious is a must at all stages of beautification so if there is a need for more demanding procedures, consult professionals from Silkwood Medical to ensure the safest way to improve your looks.
A great number of consumers are willing to pay extra money for the products manufactured by companies committed to sustainability. Such companies have embraced green practices like reduced packaging and using recycled materials. The number of consumers who are environmentally-friendly keeps growing and, as expected, many brands are making changes toward reducing the carbon footprint and saving the resources.
Buying cruelty-free products is a big step and good for health, environment and of course, animals. However, a step further is going vegan, meaning that vegan beauty products do not contain any animal products or animal by-products like beeswax or honey. Although the collection of some ingredients does not hurt animals, vegan cosmetics avoid any trace of animal ingredients.
Being beauty conscious is a big transition and moving forward to healthier life. Although it can be tricky to avoid marketing traps that brands use, the key is to educate yourself and to know how to read labels. Go with the trusted logos and brands and don’t hesitate to prepare your beautifying cocktail made of ingredients right from your kitchen. Limiting the number of toxins that you normally expose your body to will inevitably result in better appearance and health.’
